Vacation??
Where did you go on your last vacation? We went home to Michigan to visit friends and family. Which, don't get me wrong, was a great time, but will this be the routine? Will we always go home for a vacation? Or should we go travel elsewhere and hope our friends and family come visit us?
Here's the thing. I love to go MI, but I really want to go see something new. We're on the west coast and I think we should capitalize on all that's out here while it's so close. In the time it took to drive up to Houghton we could be in Glacier National Park, Crater Lake National Park. Or, after a somewhat long, 12 hour drive we could be in Yellowstone.
Can you tell I'm anxious to go somewhere?

I whole heartedly agree with taking a real vacation. We spent two weeks in Wisconsin this year over the holidays. Yeah it was nice but with the money we spent we could have gone somewhere awesome for a week. I'm really hoping this year something will come about but right now it looks merely as though it's holiday travel and wedding travel.
Good Lord you're alive!!
Wait til you have kids. Then the obligation to visit the fam on your vacation gets even stronger. But I love going home for vacation. We're going to compromise this year by doing smaller weekend trips to things close by, and spend a week in the summer at home.
I would totally capitalize on your location though. You shouldn't feel guilty about it, you're int a beautiful part of the country!
We go back to MI a lot. But we never call it "vacation" - we are close enough that weekend trips are adequate, so we aren't using vacation days.
But seeing family goes both ways, and I think that when you are younger you shouldn't be expected to spend all of your money on trips back home - I'm actually pretty mad that my IL's have never been to our new house (we've lived here over a year), but we are made to feel guilty if we don't visit them frequently.
I say - plan a real vacation (or two, and some weekend trips) and then work family visits around them, or invite family along on some of your trips.
Go to Glacier!!!!! I haven't been there but I really want to go!!! I am glad to see that you are alive. Laura said you were but I wasn't sure
Glacier and Crater Lake are both awesome! I could go on and on about how beautiful Granite Park is. If you go, check out staying in either Sperry or Granite Chalet - my family did that once and I have the best memories of being there - the park is so amazing!
Go on your vacation and see everything there is to see! You never know when you'll have this opportunity again! MI will always be there waiting, and rest assured, you'll see us plenty as the years go by! ...and trust me, everyone will come see you eventually it's been "too long." (ps-- aj is right about the kids thing)
